MAC USDAA & C-WAGS

I volunteered at the MAC USDAA agility trial last Friday and Saturday. It's always fun to see old friends, make new ones, and watch all the amazing dogs and their handlers. I did some ring stewarding, timing, scribing, and leash running. Of course I timed the hardest classes... ever... heh. I was in the P3/Masters ring and timed Snooker and Gamblers. It's really not that bad, but I had to remember to switch the time for the horns and do manual start/stop on some runs... It was definitely a learning experience. I've now done all jobs at a trial except score table. I'm sure that someday I'll get to do that though!

A couple friends and I do our own C-WAGS "shows" online every once in a while. It's good for making me train specific behaviors if nothing else. The current part I'm working on isn't going very smoothly. It's a modification of the utility directed jumping.
Explained:
Go Table / Jump / Jump - This challenge requires that the dog leave the handler
go out to the table, sit or down, and take the directed jump.

Ring set up includes:
An agility type pause table set at 2nd base – approximately 20’ away from Home Plate. The pause table will have two heights; 4” for dogs that jump 12” or less, and 12” for dogs that jump 16”.
Two jumps set approximately 20’ apart: 1st base and 3rd base. Any combination
of bar jump, high jump, broad jump or agility style jump constructed to be stable and safe for all dogs may be used. * See jump height table in the obedience rules. (A 6’ - 9’ tunnel may replace either or both jumps).
◊ This challenge begins with the team in heel position at Home Plate - opposite the
pause table.
◊ On order from the judge to “send your dog”, time will start and the handler will send their dog across the ring to the table where the dog must either sit or down –
judge’s predetermined position.
◊ When the dog is positioned, the handler will call/send the dog over either the right or the left jump – handler’s choice.
◊ The dog should go straight to the jump, over it and return to front position.
◊ Without instruction from the judge, the team return to original starting position and perform the same sequence again EXCEPT if the dog “sat” on the table the first
time then it must “down” on the table the second time (or vice versa). If the dog
was sent to the right side jump the first time then the dog must be sent to the left
side jump the second time (or vice versa).
◊ Time stops when the dog sits in the front position the second time.
◊ Handler may not leave Home Plate. (Hysterical, desperate gesturing by the handler
at Home Plate will be ignored by the judge and a source of entertainment for the
gallery.)
◊ Retry – Unlimited retries allowed within the time limit. If the dog takes the
incorrect jump, the team will have to begin from Home Plate, resending the dog to
the table and then the correct jump.
◊ “Fouls” – Will be incurred if the handler leaves Home Plate; If the dog takes the
incorrect jump.
This challenge will be considered Passed if: the dog goes out to the table, assumes the correct position, takes the correct jump, goes out a second time, assumes the correct second position, takes the correct second jump, the handler does not leave Home Plate, and the dog gets back to Home Plate and sits before the 60 seconds is up.

It's a lot of fun... but I don't have a table so I was using the lid of a storage bin. I got that cue semi-solid "on" coupled with a "go" to indicate moving away from me but I just can NOT get a solid "sit" out of Bailey when she goes out. Right now I'm testing out a 'wait' when she reaches the lid then a sit, which seems to be working... if she hears the 'wait' cue! I've got a bar jump and a broad jump out there. Need to pick up my old weave poles from the farm to use to mark the outsides of the jump so I'm not teaching the dogs to cut the jump early (again... I think we finally worked through that).

The two other exercises for this "show" are relatively easy. Right turn, back up two steps in heel position as well as a cloverleaf figure 8. I just need to get cones/pylons/something to make my cloverleaf then I'll video that one too.

Agility Class #2

It went SO well tonight. I handled confidently, and my handling paths were good for my dog and I. It was one of those really good nights.

A few highlights:

  • 2 very nice running a-frame contacts in the same sequence!
  • I accidently sent him over a 20" jump (normally jumps 12") and he cleared it with ease!
  • 2 complete sets of 12 weaves completed without trouble!
  • Focused during his agility runs and did his job, forgetting about the intact boys he was sure needed his attention when not running. For some reason Vegas and Henry both got his attention a lot tonight. They certainly weren't provoking him, but he was mighty interested in them.

I also laid Buzz's first track today. I figured now is as good of a time as any to lay a foundation for it. He thought that eating food off the ground and not being told to stop was amazing... heh. It was just a short track, but he was good and had fun!

Tomorrow Bailey and I have tracking class. Last week Sheila told us we'd be doing a left and a right turn on the same track. We'll see how that goes! She had one stellar day of tracks. All three I laid were executed VERY nicely. Today's tracks were mediocre at best. I need to take notes and keep a better tracking journal.

Luna came over to play today. She and Buzz had a lot of fun! Luna is supposedly a BC, but I see BC x Aussie... the jury's still out as to what she really is, other than cute!

*overly-dramatic boy-related content follows... reader has now been forewarned*

This boy has a name, but I'm chosing to leave it out. It's not important right now, and anyone who I keep in close contact with will know who he is. Otherwise it's just a random name that's no better than the term 'boy' in place of his name.

On May 22, 2008 at 10:33PM I said "good bye" to one of my best friends. No, he didn't die but we finally came to a decision together that we've grown in vastly different directions and it was harming both of us to keep trying to shove pieces of a puzzle together that just don't quite fit. It was the end of "us" and any kind of relationship we once had. We agreed that the majority of these last four and a half years were really good times. I have no regrets. The circumstances leading up to this decision are too numerous to retell, but there is certainly a great deal of saddness. There is also a new beginning.

It was probably the oddest end to a relationship I've ever encountered. The conversation had many twists and turns with very little anger. I learned a lot of things about him and myself that I'd never known before, all in a matter of a few hours. The end of the conversation was near but neither was ready to say good-bye. I started to 'count down' in a half-joking manner but after I said "ok, since neither of us is ready to let go completely" I was interrupted with a "if you ever need anything, you have my number" which made all the flood gates burst open. I did manage to finish what I wanted to say with a "1, 2, 3... good-bye" which really gave more closure than I expected.

As sad as I am right now, I feel like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I went to Duluth today to get the rest of my stuff from the townhouse we once shared (with my dogs!). After it was all loaded (or I thought it was all loaded, just got a text about clothes still there) he even took me for a ride on his new motorcycle. I absolutely ADORE motorcycles, and his is a SPORT bike! I haven't ridden a sport bike since a while before my dad died. I forgot how scary fun it is.

I really don't like laying my life our for anyone to see, but I feel like this is a milestone in my life that has taken a few months to get to. Life is a never ending roller coaster, but I've felt like I'm going in circles for so long that it's nice to see straight ahead.

*end of overly-dramatic boy-related rant*

Agility AND Tracking!

Buzz and I had our first agility class last night since last August. It was so fun to see everyone again! I got to meet Echo (a friend's pem puppy) and hold her. She's absolutely cute and full of herself... just perfect for a puppy.

Buzz ran three GREAT sequences for me. I was so pleased with his enthusiasm and drive and WEAVES! This is the first time he's seen twelve in a LONG time, and while he didn't get all twelve, it was very close. We're still working on building muscle memory as well as endurance. I know we'll get there!

I'm so glad he's still happy and willing to play games with me.

Bailey and I have tracking tonight. It should be a good class. I got a few pointers from Piper and Echo's mom last night so I'll try those out and Bailey always seems to do better at class then at home too. It's probably the difference in smells/person laying the track.

Talked to mom today too and hopefully we'll be going to Duluth for the DKC show on July 13. I'm crossing my fingers that Bailey continues to be healthy and not limping and we can run at the MAC AKC trial on the 12 then head up to Duluth Saturday night for rally and obedience on Sunday. The plan is for STD, JWW, and FAST agility on Saturday at SoccerBlast and then Excellent B, Advanced B, and Open A for rally abd obedience at the DECC.

It's fun to be addicted to all sorts of dog activities! If we can add hunting sometime (maybe next summer) then I think I'll finally be doing all dog sports I've ever wanted to do (and there will always be more to add).

tracking class #2

Our second tracking class was tonight. I went early so I could work her heeling with distractions and work Buzz. She was good, still takes her a while to focus on what we're doing, but it is improving.

Buzz had a really good stay, wanted to check everything out but kept his butt planted. I also got about ten steps with direct eye contact right from the first step off. Lots of improvements!

Tracking class-
first track was good, didn't stop for food drops, nice find
second track was even better... and I was good about letting her find the track again herself
third track we introduced a corner-triple laid and she NAILED IT! Super exciting!
fourth track was too much and had to help her along... should have stopped after #3

Tracking Is Fun!

tracking, foot targets, and weaving

Bailey has been working on foot targeting (for go-out, utility work) and tracking. Today I finally got a REAL foot target on the ground. I was very, very excited. I need to watch more closely, but I think I'm also getting a nose target with it... hah. I was able to back away slowly and she kept returning to the target on the ground and it's nice that I can hear when she hits it. Helps me a lot because it's hard to see her going out there so fast!

I'm thrilled that she's enjoying tracking so much! Yesterday I recruited my brother to lay a track. Sent him to drop the first article then walk fifteen steps in a line, drop the second article and retrace his steps (a double laid track). Since we've been working on article indication more than actual tracking, I didn't put food on either article. She missed the scent the first time (but I got a down indication on the start article, so that was super cool and rewarded that from my pocket), so we restarted and she nailed it the second time. She actually pulled me from behind to the end article. Lots of treats for that, it was so cool to see her work (and skip over the food drops on the track... heh).

Buzz is learning how to weave. I know, sounds silly but he hasn't ever had consistent practice. He CAN weave, but not confidently or fast. I started last Friday and he's been weaving for his breakfast and dinner every day now. The weaves are still slow but today he got his entry and stayed in both times for his breakfast today. Very cool! I'm hoping by mid june he'll be more confident and have more speed, but we'll see. I need to remember to ONLY do two and if he pops out, remove poles so he can succeed and still end there. I really have a tendency to ask too much of him all at once. I forget WHY we're doing remedial pole work... heh, need to keep sessions short and the rate of reinforcement HIGH!

Off to look for more jobs today!

2008-05-10

Lots of stuff!

Cindy Hickey visit went really well. I was pleased with our visit. Current speculation is a carpal problem. As soon as I start my new job (hopefully soon!), Bailey will be going in for carpal xrays. She had a very long and intensive massage. She was a VERY good dog for it too!

I have a whole slew of stuff to do with her, starting Sunday. She's been moving well still, not very stiff at all, which makes me happy.

I was a 'good trainer' today and worked Buzz on weaves with a target (trying to get his focus in the weaves and not on me... so target at the end... it seems to be working so far) and he was a good boy! He was also working on his long sit maintain while I was setting the weaves up and he was excellent then too!

Bailey-boo dog ran two tracks (I swear, she's understanding it more and more each time we track... so fun to see her work). We also worked on article indication and it developed into her laying ON the object and facing me... we'll see how well that actually works. I also did some go-out/away work for Utility.

Note to self from GP/KV- FOOT TARGET! hehe

Picked Jeremy up from the airport today, I've missed that boy a LOT. So much fun to chat again. I'm excited he's home for the summer, even though not really because he'll be at camp, pfft! AND, he'll be in CHINA next fall! Super cool for him though, great opportunity!

2008-05-07

I'm FREE (plus tracking)

I'm FREE! School is DONE until next fall! WAHOO!

Just gotta wait on grades... heh.

We made it to tracking tonight (with a few minutes to spare even) and it was SO much fun! She was a very good girlie and really seemed to enjoy it! We have some homework to do, that I plan on being serious about.

Try to do 2 tracks on each outing and take her out twice a day. 15-20 yards with a flag and start article, shuffle track, food drops about every 3 feet, jackpot at the end article. It was so fun to see her THRILLED to work! I'd like to start Buzz too, since I have an idea of what we're doing at least.

Definitely gonna try it with Buzz at the park on Friday!

Tracking is going to be a blast and I can't wait for next week already!

2008-05-06

Almost...

What do I have left to do to complete my junior year of college?
  1. Parent Letter (halfish done)
  2. Women and Religion final (1/3 done)
  3. Middle School Philosophies and Models final project and study for final test (erm, sorta started!)
  4. Portfolio evidence statement for the above MSPM class
  5. Clean more bottles for Art tomorrow
  6. Finish lesson plan for art tomorrow
  7. Finish packing car (85% done)

Then it's HOME time! I'll get home, take stuff out of backseat, pack dog (with harness, collar, leash, water, treats, bowl, anything else I see and grab) and head to Total Recall for our FIRST tracking lesson!

Thursday the same girly dog and I head out to Pine City for her massage therapy appointment with Cindy Hickey.

I REALLY didn't forget!

My best buddy in the whole world turned TEN yesterday. Double digits baby!

He is formally known as, UCD Sir Buzz Domino NAC NJC TN-N TG-N RN RL1 CGC

I can't believe we've made it as far as we have... it's been a wonderful journey, and I don't anticipate it stopping any time soon. In celebration of his birthday, we have weekend plans for a whole day at the park. He should enjoy that, and it'll just be the two of us!

Happy Birthday Buzzy boy! I'll get some updated pictures when I go home but for now this will have to do-

News from the vet!

Bailey's anaplasmosis titer and her bloodwork showed her body is doing just fine with the anaplasmosis and the vet opted not to treat with antibiotics! That's good news! Her body CAN do something right!

Dr. Enochs was happy with the bloodwork of both dogs, so that really is a relief.

I'm almost done with school! YAY! We're hoping to start tracking next Wednesday (gonna be a busy day but so worth it) and then Bailey has her appointment on Thursday morning.

I'm not quite sure when agility will start yet.

2008-04-27

Hmmmmm...

Friday I turned in my gimongo paper for Women and Religion (ok, so it was only eight pages but *whine* I rarely have to write more than three).

Dogs had vet appointments at 4pm.
Cindy Hickey recommended we do a 4DX test on Bailey to see if any of those nasty diseases could be causing her lameness (lymes, anaplasmosis, erlichiosis, or heartworm). Guess what? She has anaplasmosis. Erg. So then they drew more blood and sent it out to be checked further, my brain was on overload at that point and I'm not exactly sure what else they are looking for but we should get results on Tuesday.

Buzz had a heartworm test and a senior blood panel done. We'll see what those results reveal too I guess.

When I actually have money again, Buzz needs a thyroid panel too... hopefully sometime this summer. They'll send it to MSU for me too, so yay!

Saturday I was at the tracking test bright and early with absolutely no knowledge of what happens at a tracking test. It was so much FUN though, despite the mini hail/rain/snow storm. I got to use the purple flags. We plotted tracks and I walked mine again to make sure I knew it. Redrew my map too. I am quite proud of my second map, for it being my first tracking experience ever... hah!

Sunday (today) was THE best! Tracking is SO amazingly COOL to watch!
  • First up was a Bloodhound named Ava. She worked the track really well and PASSED! YAY!
  • Second up was a Lakeland Terrier named Amanda. She got off her track a few times but never more than 50 yards and got back on every time. Second pass of the day!
  • Third was a GSD, as he ran I was laying my track and picking up flags so I didn't get to watch it but the GSD passed too! 3/3 was a great way to start the day.
  • Fourth was another Bloodhound who sadly didn't pass, but did finish after being put back on the track.
  • Fifth was my track. I got a German Wirehair... very fit and pretty dog. She was amazing to watch! Her indication at the end was very cool (laying down) and we all clapped, she was fast and efficient and great!
  • Sixth was a Tibbie who was doing SO well, made it to the last turn and couldn't find it... after being whistled and put back on the track he found the glove though.
  • Seventh (and last of the day) was a Bassett Hound. HUGE dog, very happy, funny. He was breathtaking (I'm sure his handler was breathless) until he got to his LAST corner, and being on top of a hill, he couldn't find it. They did get within about 20 yards of the glove, but upwind from it and it was SO close. He was so excited to GO and so 'on' the track in the beginning.

I love tracking! I can't wait to start classes now!

School Book Excerpts

I'm constantly amazed at what you can actually find in a school book if you look hard enough! Just last week I found "a healed earth is one in which all the patterns of destruction… have been deeply transformed, the patterns that are resulting in proliferating population, deepening poverty, famine, soil erosion, deforestation, the extinction of species, air and water pollution, energy crises, and militarism” (Bagley and McIntosh, 234). That's from one of my Women and Religion books, the one I actually read consistently!

Another is from Art Methods today, "Alone we can do so little, but together we can do so much" by Helen Keller.

Sometimes school isn't so bad. I would never say that anywhere close to finals though (like right now) because there is SO much to do before the end of the semester!

CHIC

As I'm sure most of my 'dog friends' are well aware, I'm quite obsessed with dog genetics and health. Of course, I know more about ESS in general, but I work on expanding my knowledge to other breeds whenever I have the chance.

Lately I've been contemplating what would be a good set of requirements for an English Springer Spaniel CHIC.

The 'obvious' are:
Hips (OFA, OVC, PennHIP)
Elbows (OFA, OVC)
PRA
CERF- at least every two years

From what I've heard, you don't want to make it "too complicated" at first, or no one will desire a CHIC number.

If I had my way... I would also include:
Shoulders (OFA)
Thyroid- after age 3
Cardiac- after age 3
PFK
Fucosidosis

Of course, I feel that all of these should be done prior to breeding. I don't believe dogs should be bred before reaching three years old, which is evident by the age restraint I would place on thyroid and cardiac, if I could have my way of course! :)

And "I know, I know" that running all of these tests would be mighty expensive. If they are spread out over time, it might not seem so bad! :)
  • PRA, PFK, Fucosidosis at a year old (if the PRA status isn't known based on parentage)
  • CERF at 2 years old
  • hips, elbows, shoulders done at 3 years
  • Thyroid and Cardiac done at 3.5-4 years old

Any male dogs I own in the future that come from breeders will be neutered at least after age two and will have hip, elbow, and shoulder xrays taken at the time of neuter and sent to OFA. The "other" stuff I would plan to do as I do now; take advantage of clinics and use them whenever available.

I love the Cardiac and CERF clinics at the TCVESSA August show. Even though I've only utilized them for a year now, I plan to continue into the future. Buzz will have a CERF exam and Cardiac exam this year while Bailey will probably only have a CERF.

Toys

I'm looking for some new dog and cat toys. We have a wide variety and plentiful supply of plushie/soft dog toys. They are fun and exciting, but only to a certain extent.

A buster cube is definitely on the list. We had a ball that was similar years ago, but it got left outside and moldy... needless to say it went bye bye.

I did order an Orbee ball, but haven't been home to try it out yet. I'm looking for some rubber toys or interactive toys I guess.

Kitties have some boxes, feathery balls, fake mice, fleece stuff... I'd love to get a kitty kong of sorts, but I don't know what I'm looking for.

Any suggestions?

2008-04-15

PupDate, Rascal, and School

The puppers are pretty good. They are really enjoying spring. It means we spend more time outside together. I can't wait to start going to the farm regularily. We have LOTS of fields and trails that are relatively burr-free and it's good exercise for all of us.

Mom said that Bailey isn't limping today. I don't know whether to believe that or not... but we'll see.

I finally emailed K. Elmquist about the massages. We'll see where that leads.

I'm still tossing around the idea of updating Rasza's rabise and FeLV vaccines. He's "due" according to the vet but blarg. They have NO contact with outside cats right now, so I think I may push that until summer time.

We have also switched all of the animals to the vet where we previously only brought the dogs. After Rascal's fiasco this summer, I didn't feel comfortable bringing them back. I don't know what to do about Rascal at all, so I may just call the vet someday or ask at the dogs appointment. That's the only thing that worries me about him is a total change of routine and they have no background knowledge/history on him other than what's on the paperwork I have from last summer.

Now, back to my reguilarly scheduled school. I don't think I've ever been so incredibly calm with so much to do. I've taken the attitude of "I'll do what I can, I will not kill myself over school and work..." Que Cera Cera (what will be, will be). I hope that doesn't come back to bite me in the butt though!

Baby Update II

Vet just called. Good news! The Methimazole is doing it's job, but a little TOO well. hehe

They recommended putting her on 1/2 tablet once a day (instead of twice) and doing a re-check of her thyroid in three months.

VERY good news!

*note to self: schedule the re-check now*

2008-04-14

limping

My dog is limping... again. The girly dog was feeling much better and there was no sign of a limp. I thought we could do some relatively low key play outside. Guess not.

After two throws she came up limping. Of course the nutcase still wanted to play so I had to steal her ball and crate her. Put the Rimadyl out and told mom that if she was still limping at dinner time to give her 1/2 Rimadyl for two days and we'll go from there.

I'm trying to get things with the animals taken care of in order of importance. Baby's was urgent, so her vet visits have been scheduled first. As long as the results of her recent bloodwork come back favorable and we don't have to re-check in a couple weeks, Bailey should be able to see CH the second week of May.

Buzz and Bailey go in for heartworm antigen tests April 25 and that's when Buzz'll have his senior blood panel done too.

At least I know I can keep Bailey pain free with meds (NSAIDS, so I'm not all that worried about long term effects with sporadic use) until we can see the massage therapist and chiropractor.

2008-04-12

Baby Update

Good news is the vet was pleased with her weight gain (went from 4.8 to 5.3 pounds in just under a month), overall happy demeanor (purring and rubbing up agains the vet just out of her crate), and inquisitiveness (had to investigate everything on the counter, even the alcohol spray bottle).

She is looking and feeling so much better. They drew blood again and she was very good. They had treats for good kitties and she GREATLY enjoyed those!

Today they drew blood to run a mini profile, check her blood count, and a thyroid T4. We should have results on Tuesday. I'm hoping they're favorable and show the Methimazole is doing it's job.

Cheaper bill than I was expecting too! That's always a plus!

2008-04-08

xrays

I should have the money to do Buzz's hip/elbow xrays at the end of May. If I do decide to do them, I will not be sedating him. It's not worth the risk. We'll just get as clear of a shot as we can of his hips.

I know that he's at an advanced age; and it might not change my agility decisions, but I think it's still a good idea. It will certainly make me feel better.

The reason I'm still on the fence is that I've already decided this will be his last even 'semi-competative' year. As long as he's healthy and wants to keep playing the game we'll be trailing one weekend (both days) in June, July, August, and December. He only does NADAC agility.

We'll see how classes go though. He's signed up for agility starting in May.

2008-04-05

the people you meet!

I met two people I worked with at Wild Mountain at a party tonight.

Twas very interesting to say the least! I recognized Derek right away... red hair and all.

I'd seen Dan around school, but had NO idea where I knew him from.

haha, one of those silly 'made me laugh' kinda things

2008-04-03

Almost!

I've almost got my schedule worked out. I'm SO close. Tonight at midnight, it should be all set.

Then I can really breathe!

My schedule next semester is going to be wacky, but it is going to work... and then I WILL graduate in May of 2009!

For tonight though, I have to write an outline for my women and religion research paper (err, should probably read more of my resources for that huh?) and write a reading response for that class too. I'm in the library, that's a start at least!

In other news:
It's beautiful out! I've gone walking two days in a row now. I know, not much... but it's more than nothing.

I worked a lot last week. I should be able to get all the critters to see who they need to see within the next month without money stress, so that is REALLY nice!

Baby has to get her blood work rechecked (April 12).
Buzz needs his senior blood panel, T4, and heartworm antigen test (April 24)
Bailey needs heartworm antigen test (April 24)
Bailey needs to see the good massage lady (hopefully second week of may)

As soon as these papers are done, I'm going to SLEEP... very soundly too!

2008-04-01

rant time

GRRRR!

So many rants right now. Don't even know where to begin.

School seems like a great place to start. TONS of homework due this week... registering for classes this week; oh yeah, that, registering for classes.

So, went to register for that last class I need to graduate. (Well, I need a few but this is a specialty class I HAVE to take, no alternate accepted.) It's not there. Thinking maybe I'm searching wrong. Nope, it's only offered in the spring.

Not kidding, nope, dead serious.

On my way to talk to lots of people about this. Fuming still (after discovering this last night). Pissed off royally.

Grrness!

The class? Science and Culture... and that wonderful class is taught by the one and only Sr. Margaret Clarke. Goody!

meal time

Meal time at our house is chaos. Not that everyone is ill behaved (hovering around the counter is ill behaved? naw! Opportunists at work!), but the stuff we've gotta do to prepare meals for the crew.

Just for kicks, I'm posting here what everyone gets (hint: there should be links to everything I post so you can check it out)

(Everyone gets fed twice a day)
Buzz
>1 cup of kibble, Fromm
1/2 tablet Glyco-Flex II
2 Fish oil capsules
1 tsp Prozyme

Bailey
1 cup of kibble, Fromm
1/2 tablet Glyco-Flex II (morning only)
1 Fish oil capsule
1 tsp Prozyme

Baby
>1/4 cup kibble, Chicken Soup (can't get Felidae locally anymore)
1/2 tablet Methimazole (hyperthyroid med)

2 tablespoons canned Felidae
lots of water with food
(evening)
1/4 cup SD c/d (most likely going to switch to the Wysong Uretic when this bag runs out; didn't know there was an alternative until a month ago and very wary of switching his diet because he couldn't handle another surgery if he were to block again)

Happy Birthday ALI!

A good friend from school turned 21 last week and her party was last night. It was super exciting! We had a blast! Her parents made her a 'bud lite' cake for her birthday and it was a fabulous creation.

I really can't believe that we're all getting (dare I say it?) old. heh Old is just a term though, we'll be youthful forever... no doubt!

Of course, I was the only one who carried a sippy cup around. No one else was brave enough. Mine kept spurting at me due to the carbonation... beware, carbonation and sippy cups with no vent don't go well together!

I was even feeling generous enough to share my lucky charms in vanilla soy milk. I don't usually share food well, but I felt like it... and the kid only wanted my marshmallows.

I think that's my new favorite meal, btw. I was limited in my cereal choices before because not much goes with chocolate soy milk, and before yesterday I wasn't keen on being adventerous and trying a new kind/flavor. But I did and it is SO good!

I'm not lactose intolerant, just not a big fan of milk (or meat or many veggies) so, I find alternatives. I typically drink 8th Continent chocolate soy milk stuff, but like I said before, that doesn't go well with many cereals (I can think of 2).

I like:
cheese
bread
cukes (raw)
carrots (raw)
ranch
chipotle
most of the time I like chicken
most of the time I like ham
potatoes
lettuce
spinach
8th Continent chocolate soy milk stuff
and now Organic WestSoy Plus vanilla milk stuff

and that's about what my meals revolve around

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ALI!

Now I'm off to take a glorious walk outside because it's a beautiful day.

Goals?

I have lots of lofty goals. Goals for life, goals for dog stuff, goals for everything.

I've learned a lesson about goals though, you need to set goals for the little things that lead up to the big things.

So, since I would really like to get Bailey's CDX and Buzz's UCDX. We need to pick exercises, or portions of exercises to work on. I think both would benefit from out of sight sit stay practice. I have started doing this at home, and until it gets really reliable at home, I'm not going to bring them other places to work. So far we have worked on holding a sit while I walk in the front door, close it, then walk back out; sit in another room while I prepare dinner; and just plain ol' stay games.

I'd like to work up to leaving dog in a sit and me go to basement and return to find doggy just where I left him/her. We'll get there. Both have done a longer than three minute sit, but not for quite a while (well, Bailey did it last August but I don't think that was anything more than a fluke because I never really trained it).

So, goals for next time I go home are more sit/stay work until we can get on some mats and work with equipment at a run through or lesson.

work was CRAZY!!! last night

For those who don't know, I work at Subway. That's right, I'm a 'Sandwich Artist' who comes home from work reeking like bread. My roommates think I smell really good. I guess Subway bread would smell good, if I didn't smell like it!

Anyways, a new 'deal' started recently. As more and more people learn about it, we get more and more customers. You can now get any 'regular' (feast, philly cheesesteak, and doublestacked sandwiches not included) footlong sandwich for only $5. Apparently people think that's the most fabulous thing in the world!

Do you know what that means? That means that last night between five and six pm, we made ninety sandwiches. We can only bake twelve pieces of bread at a time. We had been baking bread all day, but... we came very close to running out. Under normal circumstances, we would borrow bread from the mall, central, london, or holiday center. Everyone of those places was almost out of bread too! One of them even has a double oven!

We finished the rush with TEN PIECES of bread! FYI, a full cabinet holds fifty-four footlong pieces of bread. Poor Steven was STILL baking bread when I left at ten because they needed bread for in the morning.

It was nuts. I've worked quite often when we've had insane rushes, but NEVER that much. We don't even know how to prevent it in the future because they were baking bread ALL day and we only have one oven.

We all survived, but it's not something any of us want to repeat!

The Count Down Begins!

To Buzz's Novice Versatility!

Requirements:
NAC, check!
NJC, check!
TN-N, check!
TG-N, check!
NCC, almost... need one more Q!
WV-N, it's finally started... need two more Qs!

I can't believe it, but we MAY actually get into Open. We 'only' need five more jumpers Qs, six more tunnelers Qs... it's actually becoming a realistic goal! Woohoo!

I do want to continue playing in obedience and rally too, but those are somewhat limited currently by availability. Though, I have heard rumor of another summer APDT trial. If so, we're clearing that weekend out and saving up for it! I absolutely love APDT, and I think Buzz does too! What's better than playing lots of fun games, AND getting treats too!?!?!?

Fido Fleece

Our agility friend saw Fido Fleece on sale at Chuck and Dons a while back and knew we were looking for some. So she kindly picked some up for us and held onto them until the trial. They fit the dogs PERFECTLY!

I took some pictures, to show off their new winter coats!
Buzz looks somewhat like a hot dog... but he's cute!

They should keep the dogs nice and toasty when it gets down to -20 again next winter! Fido Fleece rocks!

Courtesy of Mousie! Thanks!

They each even get their OWN playlist! How cool!

Bailey's tunnelers run
(ok, so she's not moving as fast as it felt like... but we sitll had tons of fun and I didn't/don't notice any sign of pain... woohoo; stupid handler pulled her off the last tunnel with early celebration... ARG, but we STILL MADE TIME!)

The Spuzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Touch N Go #2 (should have done that front cross between the blue and yellow tunnels in the back)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=R-I2f-4_oyk

The weavers training run... my dog got stuck... big time, but he weaved, we celebrated... and he did all his weaves in the next weavers run!!!!

He weaves, he weaves! Stupid handler pulled him out of the weaves... but we STILL MADE TIME!
http://youtube.com/watch?v=_bL64ZI1_z4

Tunnelers- he was moving kinda slow, I'm thinking 4 runs a day might be his max now... he did five great in December but... he is getting older. We might need to adjust his arthritis meds again too. At least we have time to play around with it.

ACTS NADAC results...

This is definitely on the list of 'best trials' that I've been informally keeping. It wasn't the Qs, it was the small successes that are building into big successes.

Buzz
1. I was able to regain his focus after touching noses with a horse in the stall and sniffing calves. We went on to complete the touch n go course and he didn't visit the rest of the day. How did I regain his focus? Tried calling his name which elicited no response, walked up to him, downed him, took a lead out and sent him into a tunnel. We were able to finish the course nicely!
2. He was RUNNING and having fun.
3. HE WEAVED! He really did it!
4. Novice Touch N Go qualifying run to earn TG-N
5. Q in tunnelers
6. FIRST ever Q in WEAVERS! (A baby food turkey party followed that run!)

Bailey
1. Shot off like a rocket in tunnelers.
2. Really responded well to cues
3. Ran SUPER FAST! (I think this deserves to be multiplied by like a hundered)
4. QUALIFIED to finish her TN-N; her FIRST agility title!

It was a great day! They both ran SO well... SO well!

I *think* I'll move her up to Open tunnelers. It's the same course, she's shown she has the speed for it... and then I don't have to pawn off the rest of cooling out a dog while I run another. Our warm up/cool down routines are fairly long... and done to prevent injuries. I won't put away a 'hot' dog so while I warmed Bailey up and ran her a really nice friend finished cooling Buzz out for me. I much appreciated that!

*hehehe*

Tonight is my birthday party!

I'm excited, it should be lots of fun... we're meeting at Grizzly's at 7 then of course there is an after party, but we don't know where yet.

Saturday bringing Baby to the vet.

Sunday, DOG SHOW! We finally get to play NADAC again! I'm very excited about that!

elbows

Hmmm... now I really want to learn more about vet stuff!

Bailey's elbows both passed.

I'm very confused. Then why was she limping (and probably would be still without her joint supplement)? So, we got good news but that also means we didn't find the answer to the problem. I just don't get it. The left elbow was REALLY nice. The right one, not so much.

I should give my vet a lot of credit though, he said they would both pass, and they did. I was very skeptical.

Anyways, here's her OFA page. http://offa.org/display.html?appnum=1216954#animal

I guess we'll keep searching for the answer about her limping.

First time since I found out that I'm saying "horray, her elbows passed" heh...

Lots of questions. Wonder what the vet'll say. Definitely have to ask him.

UKC's stance on (AKC's) limited registration

UKC Position Statement: Limited Registration Schemes and Spay/Neuter

The United Kennel Club, established in 1898, is the world’s largest all-breed performance dog registry. While we recognize other registries, and share issues and concerns with registries around the world, our rules, regulations and guidelines are indeed our own and are designed around the UKC mission statement. One difference between the UKC and another American dog registry is a method ostensibly created to encourage breeders to handle stock that is - in the breeder’s opinion - not suitable for breeding.

One dog registry has a system of registration that allows a breeder to sell puppies with a registration paper that prohibits its puppies from being registered with that registry. The United Kennel Club feels that this system is unenforceable, creates a false sense of security for the breeder, and is susceptible to abuse.

The United Kennel Club does offer a Limited Privileges Listing, which allows dogs that are spayed or neutered to compete in some UKC events. This is not to be confused with a scheme in which the papers precede the spaying or neutering of the dog. A limited registration paper does nothing to ensure the puppy in question is ever spayed or neutered.

The United Kennel Club believes that a registry has no place in attempting to legislate these matters and has no place in the breeder’s whelping box. Instead, we encourage breeders to take responsibility for these matters by: 1) spaying or neutering any dog they feel is not suitable for breeding before they sell the puppy, 2) by entering into contract with the buyer that requires spaying and neutering at a determined interval or 3) by simply holding registration papers until furnished proof of spay/neuter. Additionally, we hope that those employing spay-neuter contracts, registration schemes or any other effort consider the whole dog, rather than conformation traits alone, for the criteria for such decisions. There are many reasons that a healthy, hardy dog with, for example, great, breed-specific hunting instincts could advance the breed even though the dog does not have the aesthetics to win in a dog show ring.

In America, when a puppy buyer purchases a puppy, the puppy is theirs: they have every right to do with it what is allowable within the parameters of prevailing law. No dog registry owns a dog, a breed, or a breeder. Obviously, the UKC prefers any dog is bred responsibly and for the criteria outlined in our UKC Total Dog approach, an approach which includes but is not limited to breed conformation. It is our mission to create events and programs that showcase the Total Dog as a way to encourage such breeding.

Proponents of a limited registration approach claim the registration certificate discourages the buyer from breeding the dog. Opponents claim that there is room for abuse by breeders who: 1) want to limit the market in their area of puppies that are registrable by a specific registry; 2) want to charge twice for the same puppy; or once to purchase the puppy, and a second time to reverse the limited status or 3) use it as leverage to persuade owners to put a performance title on the dog before releasing full privileges.

The United Kennel Club, Inc. has no opinion of either side of any of these claims as we do not have such a registration scheme. We have no intent, however, of being part of such abuse. We feel that when a breeder chooses to advance their breed by creating puppies, they accept full responsibility while being aware of all of the uncertainties and uncontrollable issues associated with canine genetics and human behavior.

Acknowledging some of the philosophical differences that exist between registries also may help in shedding light on the topic. The United Kennel Club has always and will always be a performance dog registry. While we proudly hold conformation events with a total dog emphasis, we are not driven by one specific event type. Other registries are indeed driven by conformation events. We have no argument with that fact and applaud the diversity among registries. Our mission, however, is not defined by striving to create show dogs only. With that said, placing limits on the offspring of a dog because it doesn’t meet certain conformation criteria is less likely to be a factor for those breeding for health, performance, trainability, or breed specific character – all of which are elements that advance a breed. For example, a breeder striving to produce a quality retriever would be pleased to have a responsible person buy a dog from them and breed the dog responsibly if the dog had a strong propensity to retrieve and excellent hips, even if it had conformation traits that made it undesirable for the show ring. There are many good reasons for a responsible breeder to spay or neuter a puppy (or enter a contract to do so) beyond conformation, especially health, instincts, structure, breed character and temperament appropriate for the breed. The whole dog, and the current state of a breed’s gene pool, must be considered.

For those who think the UKC does not recognize limited registration schemes for monetary reasons should consider the following: the United Kennel Club routinely refuses registrations to AKC Registered dogs that have breed disqualifications. If the UKC was interested in increasing registration revenue, we would accept the tens of thousands of AKC registered dogs with disqualifying faults such as white Schnauzers, red Rottweilers, and silver Labradors.

We encourage all breeders to consider the creation of a litter of puppies a major and sometimes daunting responsibility. Every puppy a breeder creates deserves a good home with responsible owners. We understand the inexact science of breeding and that the results can be less than desired. In cases where a puppy does not meet a breeder’s own personal criteria to advance the breed, we strongly encourage them to spay or neuter the puppy before selling it or to enter into a binding contract to do so and not to rely on a dog registry to implement this request.

Found the link on Cat's blog, then this was posted at: http://www.swedishvallhund.com/ukc_position_statement.htm, and I can't seem to find a direct link on UKC. I'll keep searching.

Please, if you read this... comment, as I think it would be a really good discussion!

Happy Birthday... to me!

I'm 21 today!

Last night brothers took me out to celebrate since in WI you get an 'hour of power' which was only an hour because of daylight savings!

So, to celebrate I had:
1 screwdriver
1 sex on the beach
1 jag bomb
1 tequilia sunrise
1/2 dreamsicle

And later today I had:
1 pomegranite margarita

It was a good night. Saw TONS of people I knew which made it super fun!

screen savers

I've been on and off the computer all day today. Came back from taking the dogs for a walk (we've got improvement with that whole 'walk nicely' bit with Bailey, very happy about that) and saw a picture on my screen saver that I couldn't remember taking or looking at!

So I dug around and found a couple of pictures from 11/4/05, LONG time ago!

They're all three of my dude man and in a set of pictures that I've taken quite a few from and loved... don't know how I missed these!

I still need tons of grooming practice, but I'm getting better. Buzz smells really good, and feels so soft now too (the wonders of heat activated Ice on Ice after a bath)!

home sweet home

I'm finally home. Driving conditions were terrible. Tons of accidents, the road was like a sheet of ice. But... I made it home safe and in one piece, no accident for me!

I was so happy to see everyone again. Dogs need to be groomed and bathed REALLY badly... some 'before' pictures are at the end of this and I'll post 'after' pix tomorrow hopefully.

Everyone seems to be doing well, but Bailey isn't doing as well as I'd hoped/been told. I'm glad I'm home this week so I can try a few different things to hopefully get her back to 'normal' and pain free.

And now for some pictures of doggers that really need to be groomed and bathed!

Where do we stand?

I've been bored. How do I have time to be bored? Well, I'm hanging out for two days after spring break started to work... instead of my usual schedule that is school, work, homework, sleep... I've had HOURS of free time and 'nothing' to do. So I played with numbers instead...

Novice Versatility requirements
NAC: 3/3
NJC: 3/3
TN-N: 3/3
NCC: 2/3
TG-N: 2/3
WV-N: 0/3

We need five more qualifying scores. He's entered in weavers for the first time in two weeks. One is definitely going to be a training run. We're gonna make our own course if need be... depending on how it is set up- we'll do the set of 6, some tunnels then the set of twelve then LEAVE for a jackpot party! Or, just the set of 12 and party! Of course, throw lots of tunnels in there too for fun before the set of 12!

I'm not sure when our next trial will be, it all depends on fixing Bailey (chiro and specialist appointments) and Baby (old kitty... whatever I need to to do to make her remaining time here pain free and happy... I will do, I can certainly skip 'for fun' dog stuff for her... no questions).

Note to self- BRING CAMERA to the trial!

I'm happy it's a club trial... those are always so much fun!

2008-02-29

SPRING BREAK!

I just went to my last class before spring break! YAHOO!

I am so relieved. I thought it would never come.

This semester is burning me out already, but I think I'll be ready for a few more weeks of school after this week long break.

I'm working Saturday and Sunday (money is helpful when trying to fix broken animals) but then it's HOME time!

Message from mom is that Bailey seems to be recovering really well. Hopefully the joint supplement is really helping and she's not in pain at all. That would be the best news of the year so far.

I do hope to keep up with training blogs while I'm home. I really need to work on heeling in tons of different environments with both dogs since I know both dogs are capable of achieving a CDX or UCDX.

Going to set training goals and stick to them and actually keep records.

Time to go get some cat food from Superior. I went yesterday but a FEED STORE closes at 5 PM I guess. I was sure they'd be open until seven or so.

women and religion paper

excerpt from one of my papers... I find it highly amusing...

Luther’s interpretation of Adam and Eve in The Garden Of Eden was very thought provoking. The excerpt from “Feminism and Theology” by Janet Martin Soskice and Diana Lipton offered Luther’s interpretation of 1 Timothy 2:13-14 (For Adam was formed first, then Eve; and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor.) as one uncommon way to explain the essence of “the apple incident.”

“Luther believes that nearly everyone understands this to mean that Adam was not seduced by the Devil but sinned willingly. He wanted to please his wife and placed his love for his wife ahead of his love to God. This common view, he says, presumes the serpent was afraid to approach Adam, the master, but thought Eve, though holy, was weaker and could more easily be seduced. Either Adam was seduced by the woman, who gave him the apple, or he seduced himself by noticing that she did not immediately die, therefore thinking they might escape punishment.”

The paragraph above is a quote from the book "Feminism and Theology" which has been quite an interesting read.

OFA

Nope, no elbow ratings yet (they were just sent in on Monday... I do have SOME patience), but I did find something quite intriguing while perusing the OFA site looking for explanations to hip and elbow xrays. It clearly states that the vets who read the xrays will take into consideration the breed, age, and sex when scoring the hip. That's the first I'd heard or seen of that. Does that mean the exempt all bulldogs? No, it just means that they realize what is good for one breed, may be excellent for another.

What was very interesting is that I couldn't find anything about those three factors (breed, age, and sex) in the elbow information. Especially in our agility discussion lately, it seems as though even more emphasis is finally being put on elbows, especially with that slamming down for 2o2o contacts a lot of people teach. I understand we need strict guidelines to improve breeds (and maybe they do consider those three things) but there has to be some leeway it would seem, espcially for age. I hate to say it, but I'm beginning to think that elbow xrays are more important than hip. The dogs' massage therapist told me that they carry 60% of their weight in the front (I hope I got that number right... and I think so because she was saying Bailey probably carried 70% when she was tight all over and hurting) and only 40% in the rear.

Back to school... almost done with my script for tomorrow. Mock parent/teacher conferences, fun... maybe? My "parent" is, of course, the head of the education department. I've met him a total of twice now. Once was this (yesterday now) morning at a meeting about student teaching. I asked him to be nice, and not be a disgruntled parent... hehe, he thought it was pretty funny, I was pretty serious!

We shall see!

weighing the fun

I'm trying to decide what to do show-wise for the month of April. Initially I wasn't going to show anyone, but there are TWO shows on the SAME weekend and both are equally inviting.

One is a UKC obedience show, drawback there is that it's just one show per day and we'd be showing around conformation dogs. I don't know how well he'd handle that. Plus is that our friend Heather would be there! So I know we'd have lots of fun.

Other is a NADAC show put on by my club. I have one sound dog, and vouchers. We could play and have lots of fun there too.

My other option is doing one day of each. Since tunnelers and touch n go are never offered on the same day, that would be a secondary. We love jumpers and chances (most of the time) so I'm willing to do either day. Just have to make a decision.

Or none, but that doesn't sound like a very fun option.

Oh yeah, none of these are due until the first week in April either so I have a lot of time to think!

I need a new job, then this would be a much easier decision!

breeders

I've done a lot of learning over the last few years (and I'm sure I'll be learning continually forever) but there are still things that boggle my mind about some breeders.

I know that I've said this before too but, "this is a once in a lifetime breeding" isn't ever true. Especially when, in essence, sacrificing health. I have a feeling that if a breeder searched hard enough, and outside their own dogs, a dog that is just as good, or even better... would be available.

I'm being quite vague on purpose, because I've heard this happen time and time again. Just to "preserve" a line, many aspects are sacrificed. Even more common though, is a person wanting to breed "their" dogs, instead of searching out another male for their bitch. *bangs head against wall* Don't be kennel blind, and don't breed for just ONE thing.

All dogs should be well rounded, with the fees paid to handlers someone could take a lot of obedience, agility, rally, tracking, hunting, herding, etc. classes and even have money left over to enter trials.

I guess that's why I'm still not planning to be a breeder. Too many people call themselves "breeders" and they are, in that they reproduce animals... but they're lacking in the responsible reasons for breeding.

2008-02-17

A new job...

I'm still looking for a new job, hopefully on Tuesday I can go "job hunting" because I really need something better paying. I applied at a vet office near school two weeks ago. Got a call, had an interview, got a call back saying they thought I would be good for the job, but now they're not looking to hire anyone until their "busy season" starts. Who knows when that will be, so I'm going to start looking again.

A friend suggested PCA work. So I'm looking into how I would apply for that kind of job. Apparently it pays well. Almost anything would be better than the $6.65 I currently make.

I do love my Subway job, and the people I work with (for the most part) but I just feel like I need to do something else.

Tuesday is job hunting day (provided I don't discover some massive assignment due on Wednesday).

Back to working on my "non-unit" assessment project about plants for second graders!

She's fixable!

I love my vet...

Dr. Enochs examined Bailey thoroughly (poking prodding, giving treats, checking for the difference in leg length, feeling for subluxuated disks, holding up each foot to check for resistance to stand on a certain leg) and looked through notes I had.

He thought we should take rays. So we did.

He took one of her right shoulder area and then we did OFA elbow xrays. I figured that since we were doing one elbow, we may as well do the other and send them in.

Wow were they clear, and he didn't even sedate her!

There is no bone cancer *phew that was my one HUGE fear* and it's a degenerative issue in her right elbow, most likely from a previous semi-minor injury. The super good news is he thinks she'll be fine and benefit from staying active, as long as I don't make her a "weekend warrior" so we have some strict orders to condition her long before a trial and long after (got that), some rimadyl for two days prior and two days after a trial (and of course during). I'm also going to put her on a full strength glucosamine/chondroitin supplement. Going to try the K9 Joint Health first because it worked well for Buzz and I can buy it by the gallon which will help immensly with two dogs on it consistently now. It has Glucosamine, Chondroitin, and MSM, plus a few other "goodies" in there for them.

He said she should definitely be able to run tunnelers in March as long as we get her on the joint supplement and we keep her active. And do the rimadyl. I'm so happy my dog is FIXABLE!

He doesn't know how OFA will grade her elbows. There is definite degeneration, but the elbow conformation was really good he said so we'll see. I'm not too concerned about the result, but he's as interested as I am to see what they say. In all honesty, I don't think they'll pass. I guess all we can do is wait and see though.

Again, I'm so thrilled I get to continue playing with this monster... :)

Bailey- the broken dog...

Bailey and I went to the ACTS CPE trial. She was limping slightly the night before, but seemed fine in the morning. Turns out she had two subluxuated disks, two very tight quads, and something wrong with her elbow. She saw the massage therapist who helped her immensly, but she was pulled for the weekend and hopefully we can get her fixed up soon, and learn how to prevent future injuries.

Have to wait again...

Despite really wanting to go home and see Owyn, I'm staying up at school until next weekend.

I'm sad.

I'll definitely see him next weekend though!

And I can't wait!

2008-01-29

Happy one week Birthday!

A week ago today, my (honorary) nephew was welcomed into the world. I'm going to see him on Friday and hopefully I'll get some pictures. Owyn was born at 7:49am on 1/22/08, weighing 7 pounds, and 20.5 inches long.

I'm also hoping for warmer weather after this weekend since Bailey and I have an agility trial at the horse barn. I sure hope it gets above freezing at least!

Open A

No Qs for us today. Both had some really nice parts... we definitely have work to do.I have to remember though, that I'm out there because of him. He was a good boy, just... heh there are definite oversights in my training I guess, and I really need to just get him out and work him more.

He left the ring in both runs. One he ran out the entry/exit and into the store. The other he jumped the ring gate. Yeah...He was working happily and pretty well until then too (except for that whole heeling thing). Ah well... life goes on, and we have more to practice. So, first run, we had icky heeling, but we pulled it together and ended nicely. DOR was fabulous for him, retrieve on flat was good, retrieve over high was nice (odd front but... he did it) so gave the dumbell to the steward... my dog followed the steward. So I called him... and he ran into the store. Urgh. Judge let us do the broad jump to finish, and he did it SO well, better than we'd even been practicing!

Went down on the sit... so yeah. Urgh, that was consistent today. Both times at around 1:45 of 3 minutes... guess I didn't build duration like I thought.

On our second run, I anticipated the recall after the drop. *hit handler* He did his retrieve on flat really nicely, then on the next exercise (Retrieve Over High) he went out, then went to see the judge then jumped the ring gate, a friend happened to be there and caught him, judge let him back in, I told him to "go get it" and he tried bringing it to the judge... judge said "that way" or something and then he brought it back over the jump to me... hah, silly dog.Again, broad jump was REALLY nice!

So, it was a good day, and great learning day. He was definitely happy. And he was a VERY good boy with his out of sight honor downs... both of those were stellar! hahaha

School and dog show this weekend

Well, school has started and I've made it to Wednesday! That's reason to celebrate!

Monday was a very crazy day at school. I felt like my head was going to explode and was seriously questioning my craziness in creating the schedule I did. Thankfully today was much better. It'll be just fine.

I love my Tuesdays and Thursdays. I only have one class and it is from 12-2.

This weekend it's time for obedience! Buzz and I did quite a bit of work on heeling closer and fronting closer. He's such a good boy and I just want him to have fun. He's never going to be a 199 dog because I just don't have the drive, but I am hoping we'll be able to achieve above a 190 sometime during his obedience career.

It's taken quite a bit of work to get my "not naturally heads up heeling" dog to heel with his head up. I'm still not sure how dependable it is, but I do know he understands it to some degree now. We did a lot of work on him keeping his eyes on me when moving from a halt into heeling, as that's where he generally has to drop his head to move out. I'm excited for this weekend!

interesting study

http://www.pennhip.org//09230v7.pdf

Key Points
"Keeping dogs lean did not change the genes of dogs predisposed to hip dysplasia. Rather, leanness was shown to delay or prevent the expression of radiographic signs of CHD and therefore confounded diagnosis using the OFA scoring method at 2 years of age."

"The normal OFA designation of hips at 2 years of age was conservatively wrong 46%
of the time when compared to end-of-life radiographic results. Even more telling, when 2 year OFA score was compared to histopathological findings in aged dogs, a 56% false-negative diagnosis rate was found."

"Recommendation: Dogs susceptible to CHD should be kept lean for life."

" The high false-negative rate of OFA type diagnoses at 2 years of age (46% end of life OFA type score) (56% histopath OA) warrants a more accurate test for selecting breeding stock."

"Recommendation: Hip films are warranted well beyond 2 years of age, and in the case of breeding dogs, hips should be evaluated at regular intervals for life."

Decisions...

Hmph, gotta decide which classes I REALLY want to enter for the March trials.

We're doing one day of the A-1 trial (Saturday) which means we can choose from: CC, 2 Reg, J, Tg, Wv, Hp

I'm definitely running Buzz in both regular rounds, jumpers, and touch n go (all novice). I think that's enough for one day when he'll be running more the next weekend.

The ACTS trial is the next weekend and it's non-jumping classes. I was hoping we'd have two tunnelers runs per day but it wasn't meant to be. The breakdown for that weekend is:
Sat: 2 Tg, 1 Tn, 2 Wv, 1 Hp
Sun: 2 Tg, 1 Tn, 2 Wv, 1 Hp

I'll be attending both days with Buzz (just can't pass it up)! I think I'll run all touch n go and tunnelers runs and I'm still thinking about weavers. I'd like to at least try it with him (since we need to do weavers), but I'm not sure how successful we'll be or how enjoyable I can make it for him. Maybe I'll do one run of it on Saturday? I guess I'll decide when the premium comes out.

I plan to run Bailey in tunnelers and both rounds of weavers, just one day. Hoping I can get some good weaves and some really good rewards in there.

I'm so excited and can't wait for March! Agility THREE weekends in a row (even if the first two we'll just be there one day, it's still three weekends of agility)!

Plans

We have entered the MMBC UKC Obedience trial for 1/19-1/20; ACTS CPE agility trial for 2/9-2/10; and the AKC agility 3/2 trial.

I'm looking foward to a lot of fun, a lot of learning, and maybe a new UCD!

We've really been working on all the open exercises as well as brushing up on heeling with Buzz. I'm happy to say he's a really good worker and as long as I'm being a good trainer, we make a lot of progress. He's tightened up his heeling and fronts. I've got more attention on the turns too.

Bailey is making progress on the "schutzhund" left turn and it's starting to look pretty cool.

School starts again soon, blech. I'm quite excited for spring break though because I have 3 trials planned for March.

Bailey Drop on Recall

SHE CAN do it still! I dunno what I've been doing wrong but when I decide to video it... she does it right...

oh well, it's pretty and you can see me signal even though I'm off camera...

AKC Obedience Advisory Committee

I'd like to write to the AKC about considering a veterans division, but I haven't got a clue where to start.

My reasons for requesting it:
A) it would be optional, it's not something you have to do when your dog reaches a certain age
B) it would allow more dogs to compete later in life
C) it would force handlers to step back and look at what they are asking their dog to do (hopefully)
D) I think more dogs would be competing
E) it allows people with less than stellar-ly built dogs to have fun
F) looks out for the dog when the handler fails to

It would draw more money for the clubs too, and the AKC... I think!

Tracking

I ended up getting "Tracking From the Ground Up" for Christmas, my mom just forgot she ordered it since it didn't come in time!

So, today I started reading and we did a few "intro" exercises. I already foresee a few problems, but I don't think they'll be major.

1) I have to track on the snowmobile tracks because the "regular" snow is too powdery and the treats just get buried.

2) The dogs are used to wearing harnesses for walks or just around the house. I do want them to know that "we're going tracking" instead of "we're going walking" and I'll eventually probably buy a real tracking harness, but for now I think they'll be fine taking cues from the start flag and my verbal cue to "track!" to realize we're NOT just going for a walk.

3) I REALLY need to work on keeping track of what we do. I was really good today, got out a notebook and sketched what I did along with a write up for each dog. I was really pleased with how it started.

Now I'm off to work on tricks for fun and then walk the dogs separately because
A) I need the exercise
B) I prefer walking them separately because Bailey really doesn't have good walking skills but we can work on them and she's much better if Buzz isn't with.

Gotta get my butt going though, been on the computer off and on most of the morning!

2008 goals...

Everyone seems to be making resolutions and "dog goals" for 2008. I feel like setting title goals for a year is a moot point for us because of lack of trialing, but I still enjoy thinking of how far we may get.

Based on my showing plans, we'll only have 3 days of obedience and/or rally showing for Bailey. Which means my goals can't be too lofty! I guess some reasonable goals for her are to:

1) finish her NA
2) work well for me in Open A obedience
3) finish RE
4) keep enjoying agility

I really think I could finish Buzz's novice versatility this year. We've got 3 titles, 2 are almost done. I think we can do it!

I've got quite a bit of NADAC planned because it's what we all enjoy the most. Though we do have UKC Obedience, CPE agility, and AKC obed/rally/agility planned.

PRA

I finally got Bailey's PRA certificate from the U of MO. I got one initially, but there were a few errors (must have been my writing) so I asked for hers to be corrected.

They had blood drawn at the end of August. After prodding I received unofficial results the middle of October. In November I received the certificates to find Bailey's registered name spelled wrong and the registration number wrong. Can't send that in so I asked for it to be corrected. They were so filled up with the National that my request couldn't be honored until now. It really doesn't matter, I was just getting frustrated that I wasn't hearing anything at all. Gotta remember to send a "thank you" email now. I really do appreciate all they are doing. It is so very helpful for our breed.

I wanted an accurate one anyways, but I also planned to send hers in since:
A) it's free since she's affected
B) hers might actually have an impact on someone's breeding choices
C) I enjoy the OFA database :)

I'm currently trying to decide if I should send Buzz's in. His would cost me $15.

I'll probably send it in next time he gets CERF'd. I plan to do cardiac on him next August (2008) at the TCVESSA specialty since he's PRA clear. The plan for the year after (August 2009) is to CERF again to check for signs of problems not related to PRA (I guess we'd be looking for cataracts).

Bailey will be CERF'd yearly now. I need to know what's going on and the only way is to CERF her.

YIPPY!

The weekend ended as well as it started. Buzz got his TN-N today! YAHOO! He also Q'd in Jumpers with a REALLY nice run. He enjoyed himself ALL weekend and it showed in his runs. He was SO responsive and such a good boy!

Bailey also Q'd today. In chances! It was a distance jump pinwheel challenge. Had to rearcross and send out then layer a jump. She ran it ABSOLUTELY flawlessly. It was such a memorable run. So smooth. We were truly working together in that run. She was SO fast, responsive, and just a GREAT girly!

Buzz is now:
Sir Buzz Domino NAC NJC TN-N RN RL1 CGC

Ms. Bailey is SO close... We'll get there, no doubt!

2007-12-29

WAHOO!

I can't update my website from home anymore (sad, I know... hah) but I can certainly post brags here!

Buzz ran SO WELL today! He qualified in 4/5 runs and they were ALL really nice. We were working together as a team and he was RUNNING!

He FINISHED HIS NAC! A title I never thought we'd get! But we got it! He qualified in both standard runs today to finish it! YIPPY!

He also Q'd in jumpers and chances. Both were REALLY nice runs. I'm just beyond thrilled with him.

I hope tomorrow is even half as good! I've got both hooligans tomorrow... chances and tunnelers for Bailey; chances, tunnelers, and jumpers for Buzz.

As of tonight Buzz is now:
Sir Buzz Domino NAC NJC RN Rl1 CGC (and now we have even more "almost" titles! YAY!)

What A GOOD boy! We had a HUGE party after jumpers. We had smaller parties after every run but I had some chicken, NB roll, and some Zukes that he got... he was happy!

Packing Up

Packing up the car for the trial tomorrow. I sure hope I've got everything...

cut up the NB roll
leashes
crates
crate pads
crate covers (old sheets)
water
dishes
more treats
water for the human

still need to get
sausage from the store to bring for the pot luck
same for crackers and cheese

We're going to have fun this weekend, that's for sure! I think I have everything I need (even the sheets to write our results down on) and just have to charge the camera batteries now.

I'm still so mad I lost my flash drive because now I can't upload my updated website until I go back to school *dies* haha, now what am I going to do?

I sent in my entries for UKC in January for Buzz and CPE in February for Bailey.

2007-12-19

Super Exciting News!

I completely forgot to mention that
A) Buzz gained TWO UCD qualifying scores on November 10, 2007. I really can't believe how far we've come. Competing in obedience was a far away DREAM, which now became a reality with qualifying scores even!

B) Bailey has started competing in CPE agility because our friend in Ohio told us that CPE Nats are in Michigan next summer. I don't know that we'll qualify (since we would have to qualify in all 8 runs in February...), but we're certainly having fun trying. She's been such a blast to run lately. As soon as Patty puts up the videos from TCOTC, you'll be able to see how much she has improved. We had a few errors with my handling and her handler unresponsiveness but I think we got it figured out. She just wanted to RUN!

So, not only do we have NADAC agility coming up, but January 19-20 Buzz has obedience again. If we get in some good open work over xmas, I think we'll try open when gets that last UCD leg!

All we really need to work on is the broad jump. And I've got quite a few ideas. So we'll see and cross our fingers I stick to my training plan!

Been quite a long time...

since I've posted here. School has been crazy busy, as has life.

We had a really great summer (details on NEW website). Bailey finished her RA title in June, CD title in August, and has started RUNNING confidently not only at class, but at AGILITY TRIALS! WAHOO! Breakthrough!

Buzz finished his RL1 (APDT) in August, and got a very memorable RA (AKC) Q in August.

The 29th and 30th of December we'll be at the MMBC NADAC trial. I've got Buzz entered in both regular runs, touch n go, jumpers, and chances on Saturday. Sunday he has tunnelers, jumpers, and chances. Bailey has tunnelers and chances on Sunday too.

I can't wait for Christmas break! ONE more day! WAHOO!

Bailey!

I went home for *counts* 20 hours so I could bring home some junk and go to the 4-H kick off meeting.

Bailey freaked out. She was unresponsive, spacey, stressed, etc. but we worked through it and she even *gasp* got comfortable enough to play with her frisbee, and tug with me! Then we did a rally course demo (with the frisbee in my back pocket... I treated a couple of times during and threw the frisbee at the end, she STILL wanted it! YIPPY!)

Then we practiced just heeling on the mats and she was ANIMATED, HAPPY, and just GREAT! We worked on a LOT and it was SUCCESSFUL work! We did some signal stuff (come, stand in motion, down, sit), retrieve, heeling... and she was just great!

I'm so excited now! We CAN do it, we just need to get out and practice!

I'm just so excited about Bailey, wish I would have had a camera because her gaze was fixated and her TURNS were like we'd practiced... she didn't bump me, forge... nothing, it was GRAND!

Go Bailey!!!

I think I've decided to come up to Duluth for a day (or weekend) in July when they have their big dog show. Since I've got a place to stay I might as well. Then if we're ready for obedience (possibility) we can show in that but we'll be doing rally if nothing else. Buzz will be in Novice B, and Bailey in Advanced A. Should be fun, and then we do APDT before the speciality!

NADAC April 21st

Today was pretty good. It was grand seeing all of our friends again... though my "plan" didn't go as planned (do they ever?). I thought we'd be running regular first, but we ran tunnelers... which showed I hadn't shown in a while! My handling was off and caused her to miss two tunnel entrances. We GOT them but I was just being weird... so we were over time by 4 seconds. That's ok though because she really had fun and was moving at the end.

Then we had regular and encountered weaves at the third obstacle. I asked her to enter them, she tried 'em, missed... called her back did the happy "yay! GOOD girl" when she came back and tried again... she was stressed *crap* so we went on. Tunnel, a frame, jump, tunnel was part of the couse then we took the last jump and she led me to her treats. It worked well, she was VERY happy and it was grand. Just wish we coulda done that first.

It was fabulous seeing everyone again. I miss them all SO much, they're SO nice and awww... it was just great. I wish I was going again tomorrow but my dogs are pooped (though Buzz didn't run we worked quite a bit at the trial), groomed, and Bailey even had a bath... it was a BUSY day!

I want more agility and class and friends! But now I need to buckle down for finals... *sigh*

Random Ramblings...

So, as I sit to write things for my dreaded math portfolio... of course my mind goes to the dogs!

Everytime I think about who to enter in what for the TCVESSA Speciality, I just contradict myself. I hate wasting money, so I don't want to enter too much stuff where I know I'd miss a ring time. Last year I just entered altered sweeps one day and then obed/rally the next. That worked fine I guess but I want to do more. It's my goal to do rally both days. The current proposed plan is this:

(Speciality only on Thursday and Friday but supported entries on Saturday and Sunday)
Thursday: Bailey in altered sweeps and Rally

Friday: Bailey in Rally and Obedience; Buzz in Rally

Saturday: Bailey in Agility (STD & JWW) and Rally

Now, I REALLY need to think if this will stress my dog out too much. The reason Buzz is only entered once is because it'll probably take me all summer to be confident enough to enter him in Advanced again. We have a LOT of work to do. Therefore, if I don't think he's ready, we'll enter in Novice B "for fun" and I'll use it for training. But if he is magically ready, then I don't want to overdo it. ONE day will be PLENTY. Bailey stresses SO easily. I don't want to do too much but she LOVES Rally! And it's GREAT for building her confidence because she has yet to NOT enjoy herself in Rally. Depending on what this summer looks/feels like weather-wise I'll see if we actually enter agility. It's outdoors on grass, and really nice but if it's hot, she's NOT going to have fun or run well so that'd be a total bust and stupid on my part.

I just can't wait to WORK with my dogs regularily again and enjoy them! Hopefully we'll have a grand summer and I can post training stuff instead of my ramblings that stop me from doing my homework...

2007-04-12

some pictures

Hard work pays off... we're getting better! The dog that I never thought could hold a square stack, is now almost able to. We need to work on a little more enthusiasm and a little less concentration then the whole image will be better. Just ignore the scraggly dog... I stripped her out but was too lazy to do anything with the top coat except near her tail. Someday soon I'll do a full groom and more photos. I love seeing how she's progressed.

One of Buzz's favorite past times (from this summer).

And then Bailey just sticks her whole head in there!

We LOVE our agility instructor, and this is how we wished her happy birthday! I was so proud of my dog that day and it's all thanks to her!

ramblings

It's been another one of those "dangerous thinking days" here at college. Inbetween the occasional burst of being productive school-wise I've been thinking about "dog stuff" as my friends would say.

I had plans to finish Bailey's CDX by the end of the year, but in light of recent developments... I think we'll be lucky to finish her CD. Not that I don't think she has the potential, but I don't have the money to bring her to the classes we both need. So, we'll continue to play around, and I'm still thinking about what our schedule at the TCVESSA speciality will be like.

As of now, I just want to find a close show where we can go one day to do rally. She's enjoyed that a LOT so far and is much more relaxed in that ring. I need to find run throughs and good classes before we enter the obedience rings again. She's fully capable, except for those nerves and my novice-ness. We're learning together though.

She is entered on the 21st in NADAC. We're gonna go play in TUNNELS! I'm very excited about that especially since we will hopefully be running regular first. I have PLANS to pull her off the course to a BIG CHICKEN PARTY! This will probably be after the weaves unless they're at the end. It'll really depend on the course as to what I do.

I'm sure we'll have tons of fun, espcially since we'll get to see our friends again!
